How Mike Macdonald Selects Seahawks’ Captains for Each Game | Notebook

Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald has a unique way of selecting captains for each game.

Instead of choosing the same players week after week, Macdonald rotates the captaincy, giving every player on the team a chance to lead.

“I think it’s important to spread the wealth,” Macdonald said. “It gives everyone a chance to feel like they’re a part of the leadership group.”

Macdonald said he looks for players who are vocal leaders, who set a good example on and off the field, and who are respected by their teammates.

“I want guys who are going to be able to get the team fired up and ready to play,” Macdonald said. “I want guys who are going to hold their teammates accountable.”

So far this season, Macdonald has named 10 different players as captains. The list includes quarterback Geno Smith, wide receiver Tyler Lockett, running back Kenneth Walker III, linebacker Jordyn Brooks, and defensive end Uchenna Nwosu.

Macdonald said he’s been pleased with the way the captains have led the team this season.

“They’ve done a great job of setting the tone for the team,” Macdonald said. “They’ve been vocal leaders, they’ve set a good example, and they’ve been respected by their teammates.”

The Seahawks are 4-3 this season and are currently in first place in the NFC West.
