French election results: Left-wing alliance wins most seats

National Rally makes gains, but tactical voting thwarts Le Pen's hopes

A left-wing alliance has won the most seats in the French parliament after tactical voting in Sunday's second round election thwarted Marine Le Pen's hopes of becoming prime minister.

The National Rally (RN), a far-right party led by Le Pen, made big gains in the first round of the parliamentary election, winning 89 seats. However, the left-wing alliance, known as NUPES, was able to unite behind a single candidate in many constituencies, which helped them to win 131 seats in the second round.

Macron's centrist Ensemble coalition came in third place with 245 seats. This is a significant loss for Macron, who had hoped to win a majority of seats in parliament to give him a strong mandate for his second term.

The results of the parliamentary election are a blow to Le Pen, who had hoped to become prime minister and to implement her far-right agenda. However, the results also show that the French electorate is deeply divided, with a significant portion of the population voting for both far-left and far-right parties.
